# Map Grid Block

> Learn how to use Map Grid blocks to create labeled grids with feature icons for geography and location activities.

The **Map Grid** block creates a labeled grid with rows and columns, feature icons, an optional compass, and paths. Use it to teach map reading, grid references, and location skills.

## When to use Map Grid blocks

Map Grid blocks work well for:

* Teaching grid references and coordinates (e.g., "B3")
* Map reading and compass direction activities
* Geography and spatial awareness lessons
* Introducing location vocabulary (north, south, east, west)
* Creating simple maps with landmarks for learners to explore

## Settings

### Grid settings

### Display settings

  * **Small**: Compact display
  * **Medium**: Standard display

### Features and paths

You can add feature icons to specific grid cells to represent landmarks and locations. Available icons include school, tree, house, hospital, shop, church, river, mountain, park, library, fire station, and police station.

You can also draw paths between grid cells to show routes or connections.

Row and column labels are customizable. By default, columns are labeled A through E and rows are labeled 1 through 5.

## Tips for teachers and parents

**Best practices:**

* Start with a small grid (3x3 or 4x4) for younger learners, then increase size as they gain confidence
* Use the compass to reinforce directional language
* Add a background image to create more realistic map scenarios
* Place familiar landmarks (school, park, house) for engaging, relatable activities
* Use paths to show routes and practice giving and following directions
* Pair with question blocks to ask learners to identify locations or describe routes
