# Pedagogical principles

> The learning philosophy behind Edzo and why we built it the way we did.

Edzo is shaped by a set of beliefs about how learning works best. These principles guide every feature we build and every decision we make.

The best learning happens when learners are doing something. That's why Edzo is built around **interactive resources** where learners engage, respond, and create rather than passively consume.

Every question block, every interactive tool, every assignment is designed to put learners in the driver's seat.

## Teachers know best

Technology should support teaching. Edzo gives teachers the tools to:

* **Choose** what learning to assign and when
* **Adapt** resources to suit their learners' needs
* **Create** original activities grounded in their professional expertise
* **Respond** to progress with informed, timely feedback

One-size-fits-all doesn't work in a classroom. Edzo supports **differentiation** by letting teachers:

* Assign different activities to different learners or groups
* Remix existing resources to adjust difficulty, scaffolding, or context

## Motivation that serves learning

Edzo uses XP and Gems as proxies for progress. They give learners a visible sense of how far they've come, and help teachers quantify engagement at a glance.

But they're not the point. The real goal is **intrinsic motivation**: the satisfaction of discovering and understanding something new. That feeling of a learning breakthrough is what builds a lasting desire to learn.

XP and Gems support that by:

* Recognizing effort and persistence alongside correct answers
* Giving teachers a quick way to see who's engaged and who might need support
* Providing learners with a sense of progress between bigger milestones

We avoid manipulative patterns like countdown pressure, incorrect answer penalties, or shame mechanics. Rewards should feel genuinely earned.

## Built with research, refined with teachers

Edzo's approach draws on established learning science, including constructivism, formative assessment, and universal design for learning (UDL). But research alone doesn't build a great product.

We work closely with teachers to test, refine, and improve everything we build. If something doesn't work in a real classroom, it doesn't ship.
