The Drop in the Blanks Question block creates interactive drag-and-drop activities where learners complete sentences or sequences by placing items in the correct positions. Unlike Cloze Questions (which work within paragraphs), Drop in the Blanks uses discrete items that can include text or images, making it ideal for pattern activities, sequences, and visual matching.
Drop in the Blanks supports both text and image items, making it versatile for visual and text-based activities.

When to use Drop in the Blanks Questions

Drop in the Blanks questions work well for:
  • Sentence completion with visual elements
  • Pattern and sequence activities
  • Simple cloze sentences with images
  • Matching words to pictures
  • Fill-in-the-blank with a defined word bank

Creating a Drop in the Blanks Question

A Drop in the Blanks question has two parts:
  1. Stimulus items: The sentence or sequence with blanks (some items visible, some masked)
  2. Answer items: The draggable items that fill the blanks
To set up your question:
  1. Create your stimulus sequence with a mix of visible text/images and masked blanks
  2. Add the answer items that learners will drag into the blanks
  3. Set the correct answer by linking each blank to its matching answer item

Answer and Marking

The question is marked correct when all blanks contain their correct matching items. Each blank has exactly one correct answer.

Tips for teachers and parents

Best practices:
  • Use visible stimulus items to provide context (e.g., “The”, “went to the”)
  • Keep the number of blanks manageable. 2–4 blanks work well for most activities
  • Use images alongside text for younger learners or visual activities
  • Consider adding distractor items (extra answer items that don’t belong) to increase challenge
  • Preview your question to ensure the drag-and-drop interaction feels natural
