The Match Up Question block creates interactive matching activities where learners draw lines to connect items in two columns. Each item on the left has a correct match on the right. Perfect for vocabulary, definitions, conversions, and any content where learners need to identify relationships between pairs.
Match Up Questions support both text and image items, so you can create visual matching activities too.

When to use Match Up Questions

Match Up Questions work well for:
  • Matching vocabulary words to definitions
  • Connecting images to labels or descriptions
  • Pairing equivalent values (fractions, decimals, percentages)
  • Linking causes to effects or events to dates
  • Any activity where learners identify correct pairs

Settings

Pairs

Set up the matching pairs by adding items to the left and right columns. Each pair consists of:
  • A left item with a text label and optional image
  • A right item with a text label and optional image
You can add between 2 and 12 pairs.

Display settings

Shuffle sides
switch
default:"true"
When enabled, the right-side items are shuffled so they don’t appear in the same order as their matches. This is usually what you want to make the activity meaningful.
Draw style
select
default:"Line"
The style of line drawn between matched pairs:
  • Line: Straight lines between items
  • Curve: Curved lines between items

Answer and marking

The correct answer is determined by the pairs you set up. Each left item must be matched to its corresponding right item. The question is marked correct when all pairs are matched correctly.

Response settings

Response requirement
select
default:"Correct"
Determines when the question is considered complete:
  • Correct: The learner must answer correctly to proceed.
  • Answered: Any response is accepted; correctness isn’t required.
  • Optional: The learner can skip the question entirely.
Max responses
slider
default:"0"
The number of attempts the learner can make before the question is locked (0–3). Set to 0 for unlimited attempts.
XP points
slider
default:"5"
The experience points awarded for answering the question correctly (0–10).

Tips for teachers and parents

Best practices:
  • Keep the number of pairs manageable for younger learners (3 to 4 pairs)
  • Use images on one side and text on the other for vocabulary building
  • Make sure the matches are clear and unambiguous
  • For older learners, increase the number of pairs to add challenge
  • Use with topics like math facts, science terms, historical events, or spelling words
